Ten Men Stand Tall But Slip in Last Minute

The game was well contested by both sides but for four Fleet Spurs lapses in judgement the home side would have got something from this match.

Prior to the game an ironic comment from a Spurs supporter "our keeper is too tall to be lobbed" was proven incorrect as within 6 minutes of the start, that's exactly what happened. 0-1

On 16 minutes Spurs equalised when a slick pass by Sean Pierre Ortiz was met by Arron Redford. 1-1

A turning point in the game followed a minutes later when Joshua Wallace fouled a Denmead attacker on route to goal, which the Referee decided was worthy of a red card, denying goal scoring opportunity.

Denmead scored from the resulting free kick. 1-2

Spurs did not fold but continued to press for a second equaliser, which came after 41 minutes when Christian Tepper pounced on a through ball by Charlie Graves and scored with thunderous left-footed shot past the visiting goalkeepers near side post. 2-2

Denmead tried their best to retake the lead before halftime but Fleet kept them out. The half ended all square. 2-2

The visitors started the second half brighter than the home side, which resulted in The Mead retaking the lead within the first minute of the restart. 2-3

Spurs were shocked back into action and for the next 40 minutes both sides had chances to score but for stout defending and a few close, just missing the post/crossbar, shots.

With 5 minutes to go Fleet drew level. 3-3 A terrific swivel shot from Alfred Mepham just inside the Denmead box to rocket the ball into the roof of the net. [click to see video]

Unfortunately Spurs could not hold on for a share in the points, 3 minutes later a hopeful through ball from Denmead was not cleared, the rebound off the Spurs goalkeeper was pounced on by Denmead to score and regain the lead. 3-4

The game ended with all 3 points won by our visitors.
