Hayler goal not enough to secure points v Bedfont & Feltham

Although this game was no classic, it was closely fought. A draw would
probably have been the fairest result, as the sporting Bedfont officials
agreed, but two late goals transformed what appeared to be heading for a
narrow victory for Spurs into an equally narrow win for the Yellows.

The visitors began the game on top, playing the more constructive football
but creating very few openings. Fleet began to come more into the game, but
they too struggled. In general, both defenses were dominant, and both
midfields closed down their opponents effectively. Half-time came with a
blank score sheet, which fairly reflected the overall pattern of play,
though Bedfont just about shaded the half.

After the break, the game continued with defences on top and with neither
goalkeeper being troubled, though visiting keeper Kavanagh Keadall made a
smart save with his feet to keep out a Matt Hayler header. Then in the 65th
minute, after a good Spurs move down the left, Rob Parrott – playing in an
unaccustomed role up front – produced a pinpoint cross, which Hayler scooped
over Keadall to give the home side the lead. Seven minutes later came a
historic moment, when Kennels Lane saw its first sin-binning as the referee
sent Yellows midfielder Cameron Daniel-Murphy off for ten minutes.
Strangely, this seemed to have a beneficial effect on Bedfont, and within a
couple of minutes, Michael Capon had equalised, running on to a through ball
and slipping the ball accurately past Mark Appleby and into the corner of
the net. A minute into stoppage time, Bedfont’s James Kelly sidestepped a
Fleet defender and sent a well-placed lob (that’s what he said, but almost
everyone else, including the visitors’ supporters, saw it as a mishit cross)
over Appleby and just inside the far post to secure the victory.

Spurs now drop into ninth place in the table, though they have at least one
game in hand over the teams above them. Their next game is on Saturday,
when they visit Spartan South Midlands League Division One Milton Keynes
Robins in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Vase (Bletchley; kick-off
3.00).

Spurs team: Mark Appleby, Douglas Noble, Lee Bush (sub Andre Smith 61),
Jamil Saleh, Naman Nasir, James Scott, Matthew Hayler, Jack Church, Rob
Parrott (sub Max Billingham 81), Adam Bellmaine (capt – sub Billy Ludlow 77)
