Report by John Porter

Infinity commemorated Remembrance Day with a match programme that had a memorably beautiful and very moving cover.

This was the first-ever meeting between Wessex League new boys Infinity and returning boys Fleet Spurs. The game was wholehearted throughout with both sides straining every sinew - cliché of the week - and feisty at times.

The result was fair, as after an even first-half Spurs had dominated possession for most of the second half, but were unable to take full advantage by converting some good chances. However the home side had forced themselves into the game with an equaliser 13 minutes from the full-time whistle, but were finally disappointed by what turned out to be the winner five minutes later, though they came close to another equaliser when visiting keeper Aaron Bufton at full stretch was just able to turn a looping close-range header onto the top of the bar and over.

After the minute’s silence – perfectly observed – the game started with Infinity on top and the Spurs defence looking distinctly shaky. Fleet gradually came into the game and after 10 minutes skipper Tom White was unlucky when he turned on the ball in the home penalty area but his low left-foot shot hit the inside of the near post and rebounded away to safety.

Three minutes later, Infinity had their best chance of the half when their top scorer Jamie White hit a powerful shot but Bufton was equal to it. After the half-hour mark, the visitors began to dominate and created a few more decent chances, but were unable to hit the target.

At half-time, Spurs were regretting their inability to score, but a minute after the break they put that right. Seconds after the kick-off Shane Gibson had put White through on goal, but the skipper had shot tamely into the side netting.

Less than a minute later White made up for this. Following a good run along the by-line to the right of the goal he crossed the ball low to the far post where Khoury Taylor couldn’t miss - and didn’t - for his first goal for the club.

Fleet were now well on top, creating chances almost at will but wasting them, and when Gibson got strong header on target, a defender was able to block it on the line. Was this profligacy going to cost them dear and provide a twist in the tale? Well, yes, though it could have been foretold as Infinity were coming more into the game.

The twist came after 77 minutes when top scorer Jamie White equalised with a great touch to a left-wing cross and chip past Bufton. This success invigorated the home side and for a while they looked the only side likely to snatch the three points, but five minutes later came another twist.

Spurs sub Dennis Penchev had two bites at the cherry - cliché number two - but was foiled by keeper Kieran Webster. Spurs’ White was just able to reach the rebound and trickle the ball inside Webster’s left-hand post. The total length of the shots for Fleet’s two goals was estimated at 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 metres).

Infinity responded with redoubled effort but Bufton’s stretching ability prevented a final twist.

Spurs’ next two games are at Kennels Lane. On Wednesday (kick-off 7:45) they entertain an Army Representative XI in the Aldershot Divisional Football Association Senior Invitation Challenge Cup – try saying that after a few pints - and on Saturday their guests are the other first-season Wessex club, Millbrook (kick-off 3:00). At last Fleet’s skill and composure is beginning to match their great spirit, and it will be interesting to see the results of these two contrasting encounters.

Spurs’ team: Aaron Bufton; Jayson Dalton, Sam Khera, Dale Small, Lee Bush; Khoury Taylor (sub Dennis Penchev 79), Yeboah (Kelvin) Kouadio, Jack Wilson, Ryan Goddard (sub Conor Allison 19); Tom White (capt) (sub Kai Francis 90+1), Shane Gibson
