Bullet header from Jupp and calm finish from Smith see off Solent.

The Hampshire cup match v Solent University FC was played out in front of a good crowd at Kennels. Some familiar faces adorned the terraces as the growing reputation of the Spurs for playing exciting, attacking football spread in the local area.

The game started with both teams playing expansive football but it was Fleet Spurs who immediately took the initiative with some flowing passing and excellent combinations between the Bellmaine brothers in between the Solent midfield and defensive lines. Solent too had their moments early on with the number 9 striker causing a few problems and missing a good chance on his right foot early in the match. However, the breakthrough came early and it was Fleet that got it. A nice passing move through midfield found Jack Church beyond the holding midfielder with the ball. He calmly played Andre Smith in and Smith finished with a nice volleyed lob over the on-rushing keeper. This is Smith's 5th goal in 4 appearances and this stat, combined with his overall contribution is one of the keys to Fleet's success this season, particularly considering that first choice striker, Ivan Nsimbi remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Fleet Spurs stabilised their lead for a period after the goal and restricted Solent to a few half chances. The final goal of the game arrived on 29 minutes after a rampaging run by defender Rob Parrott who, somehow, found himself in the right-wing position. He chipped the ball to the back post and Liam Jupp ran on to the cross to fire a bullet header into the net.

Solent came back strongly in the latter part of the first half but could not find the net.

The second half was a quieter affair with few chances created. It was pleasing to see how well the Spurs played out the game with few emergencies. Fleet did manage a handful of good second-half chances but the Solent goalkeeper made some excellent saves.

The next round will see Fleet Spurs visit Eastleigh FC of the Vanarama National League in front of a significant crowd. The next league match for Fleet is likewise a big one. On Sunday 25th August, Fleet fly to Jersey to play a top-of-the-table clash v Jersey Bulls.
